Herbaceous Peony - Little Red Gem
This beautiful, little, very early peony is always our first to
bloom at GardenHouse. It is such a welcome sight in our early spring
garden with its mound of finely
dissected foliage (May 13 photo top left). When it's time to bloom, its buds open up into beautiful
crimson singles (May 21 photos middle and bottom left) that
quickly fade to pink (May 25 photo above).
As much as we've complained about this cool and wet spring, there have
been no hard frosts here at night to damage the flower buds on the early
blooming varieties. The result is the best show yet in our gardens
for this delightful little plant.
